Cardo Mesh Boost Is Here — Two Years After They Promised It

Cardo Systems just rolled out Mesh Boost, the biggest update to its Dynamic Mesh Communication (DMC) system since the tech launched in 2015.

Your group can now go from 15 riders to 31

Strangers can ping you mid-ride without ever pairing devices, and none of it touches your phone's data plan.

Cardo first teased this back in late 2024, branding it the "Year of the Mesh." It's now the third quarter of 2026. That's a long wait for a software update: but Cardo's own line on the delay is that they'd rather ship something reliable than rush it out half-baked. I myself have updated the firmware today on my Pactalk Pro, but have yet to try the very interesting public mesh with another rider who also got the update. Let's see how the update holds up in real group rides, but on paper, it's a legitimate leap for the platform:

What's Actually New

✅ DMC group capacity doubles: from 15 riders to 31 riders and passengers in a single mesh, the largest group size in the comms industry right now

✅ Public Mesh: an open channel that auto-connects you to any nearby Cardo rider running Mesh Boost, no pairing, no group setup, just proximity

✅ Remote Grouping: organize a ride ahead of time by sharing a link through the Cardo Connect App; everyone's device auto-joins the mesh once they're in range

✅ A redesigned Cardo Connect App interface built around navigating these new group features

✅ Delivered free, over-the-air, through the Cardo Connect App, no new hardware required

✅ Backwards compatible: older PACKTALK generations can still talk to Mesh Boost riders, they just won't get Public Mesh or Remote Grouping on their own unit

✅ Not included in this wave: Harley-Davidson-branded comms and the Schuberth SC-EDGE, both expected to get their own Mesh Boost release in Q4 2026

✅ Still in development, no release date yet: Private Chat+ (expanding private chat beyond two participants) and Cellular Intercom (a VoIP-based, unlimited-range option)

Which Units Actually Get It

Mesh Boost is live for second-generation DMC devices only: PACKTALK PRO, PACKTALK EDGE, and PACKTALK NEO. If you're running one of those, this is a genuine free upgrade, update the Cardo Connect App, update your unit's firmware through it, and Mesh Boost activates. No new purchase needed.

Cardo's Venture helmet, which integrates the same comms hardware, gets the identical OTA update.

If you're on an older PACKTALK generation, you're not locked out of the conversation entirely, you can still connect to riders using Mesh Boost; but the 31-rider mesh, Public Mesh, and Remote Grouping stay exclusive to the newer units.

The Cool Feature: Talking to Strangers

Buried in Cardo's own illustration for Public Mesh is the use case that matters most on the road: flagging a complete stranger mid-ride. Cardo's example is simple : an oncoming rider has their high beam on, and instead of flashing lights and hoping they get it, you just tell them. "Hey, your high beam is on."

That's the entire pitch for Public Mesh in one scenario. No pairing, no exchanging usernames, no app setup between two riders who've never met. If you're both running Mesh Boost and you're in range, you're already reachable. It's a small thing, but it's the kind of small thing that actually changes how riders interact with each other on the road, beyond the usual closed group-ride use case DMC has always been built around.

Is This Running on 5G?

This is the question I got from a rider coming off RESO, which handles group comms through your phone's cellular data. The answer for Mesh Boost: not yet.

DMC, and by extension Public Mesh, is a local RF mesh network, unit to unit. No SIM card, no signal bars, no mobile data involved. Each Cardo unit talks directly to nearby units, and the network self-heals and reroutes as riders join, drop out of range, or fall behind, without anyone needing to manually re-pair.

That's a fundamentally different architecture from the RESO Pilot Pro intercom installed on my other KYT helmet. RESO Soft Mesh option leans on your phone's cellular 4g/5G connection, so its effective range is tied to network coverage, in theory, riders across a city or even further apart can stay connected as long as both have signal. Cardo's mesh trades that theoretical unlimited range for something that doesn't care whether you have bars at all: it works purely on RF distance between units, extended through relay hops as more riders join the mesh.

Cardo does have an answer to the "unlimited range, data-based" use case in the pipeline: Cellular Intercom, a VoIP feature still under development with no confirmed release date. That's the one that will actually behave more like RESO, using your phone's data connection instead of RF. Until that ships, Mesh Boost's Public Mesh and Remote Grouping stay entirely offline from your phone's network.

Cardo first confirmed it was building this (Cellular Intercom) back in November 2024, when the company announced "Year of the Mesh" alongside the original Mesh Boost reveal.

If you already own a PACKTALK PRO, EDGE, or NEO, this costs nothing and needs no new hardware, just update the app and the unit firmware. The 31-rider ceiling matters for big group rides, organized ADV tours, and events. Public Mesh matters for something smaller but arguably more useful day to day: being able to say something to the rider next to you at a stoplight, or warn an oncoming stranger about their unstrapped bag, without either of you doing anything to set it up first.

Two years to wait for a software update. Cardo's betting riders will forget that once they're actually using it. 😜
