FIRST LOOK: 2026 GAC Aion UT "Big Car Energy" in a Small Car
GAC International Philippines officially entered the competitive sub-PHP 1 million EV segment on May 20, 2026, launching the all-electric GAC Aion UT at Bridgetowne in Pasig City. Positioned with the marketing tagline "Big Car Energy," this compact hatchback directly targets tech-savvy Gen Z buyers, first-time car owners, and families seeking an efficient, secondary city vehicle.
By delivering premium advanced safety and tech features while omitting select high-end creature comforts, GAC has priced the lone Elite variant to aggressively compete against entry-level options like the BYD Seagull and Dolphin.

Exterior and Design
The Aion UT adopts a minimalistic, rounded aesthetic that blends sleek contours with rigid geometric details. GAC's designers integrated square and cubical elements throughout the body, most notably in the pixel-graphics of the brake lights and daytime running lights (DRLs) to break up the vehicle's standard "bubble" silhouette.

Key Exterior Features:
- Matrix LED Headlights & DRLs: The lower cube-shaped DRL clusters serve a triple purpose as running lights, turn signals, and fog lamps. Notably, these units are independently powered by a dedicated secondary backup battery for emergency visibility.
- Front Fascia: Features a distinctly slanted, asymmetrical lower front grille.
- Integrated Sensors: The exterior hardware includes bumper-mounted radar arrays, a front windshield camera, and 360-degree cameras embedded in the door mirrors.
- Dimensions & Footprint: The car measures 4,270 mm long, 1,850 mm wide, and 1,575 mm tall. It rides on a 2,750 mm wheelbase, giving it a larger footprint and longer cabin area than traditional hatchbacks.
- EV-Specific Tires: The vehicle comes equipped with 16-inch wheels wrapped in Chaoyang low-rolling-resistance EV tires, highlighted during the launch as a major contributor to the vehicle's real-world efficiency. Claiming the "Best RRC Tyre in the W

Interior Architecture and Space Optimization
The core highlight of the Aion UT is its interior space utilization, achieved via its long wheelbase and flat floor layout.During the launch event, GAC demonstrated this modularity by displaying four customized boot setups: a camping setup, a mobile gaming hub, a mini coffee shop, and a romantic arrangement styled with blankets and carpets.

Utility and Materials:
- Cargo Capacity: The trunk provides 440 liters of storage space with the rear seats upright, which expands up to 1,600 liters when folded. The rear hatch opening is wide enough to accommodate multiple large makeup or travel suitcases without lowering the second row.
- Cabin Layout: The front seats can be laid completely flat to create a continuous, uninterrupted bedding space from the dashboard to the tailgate.
- Material Quality: The cabin features well-bolstered, supportive seats. While lower dashboard elements and door cards utilize hard plastics, soft-touch synthetic leather covers the primary armrests and touchpoints. The door panels also incorporate modular storage pockets.

Dashboard and Infotainment Technology
The dashboard layout leans heavily into a clean, digital-first interface with structural design cues heavily reminiscent of Tesla models.
- Dual-Screen Setup: Driver metrics are handled by an 8.88-inch digital instrument cluster, paired with a centralized 14.6-inch infotainment touchscreen.
- Connectivity: The primary software natively supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Steering Controls: The physical steering wheel utilizes dual thumb-scroll wheels to navigate menus, adjust audio, and control driver assistance systems.
- Access Systems: The vehicle supports proximity unlocking via a physical, bubble-shaped key fob, as well as digital keys via the GAC smartphone application.

Powertrain, Battery, and Charging Specs
The Aion UT is built on a front-wheel-drive (FWD) layout powered by GAC’s proprietary Magazine Battery safety technology. This Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) chemistry features armored structural packaging tested against severe punctures and military-grade ballistic impacts to prevent thermal runaway.

Packaging Strategy: The Pros & Cons
To hit its sub-million-peso price point, GAC chose a targeted feature-deletions strategy. Rather than compromising on safety or driving aids, they eliminated high-tier luxury amenities that first-time buyers rarely prioritize.
Pros (Standard Tech & Safety):
- Full 7-airbag matrix protecting the entire perimeter of the cabin.
- Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS): Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Keeping Assist, Forward Collision Warning, and Automatic Emergency Braking.
- High-definition 360-degree camera view with integrated "Comfort Parking" software.
- Generous second-row legroom (905 mm) and height-adjustable front seating.
Cons (Omitted Features):
- Manual adjustments only for front seats (no power seats).
- No panoramic sunroof (fixed steel roof on the Elite model).
- No heated or massaging seats.
- No rear row USB charging ports
- No power-operated tailgate.
- No frunk (front trunk) storage under the hood.

First Drive Impressions
The driving evaluation was strictly limited to a brief loop within the Bridgetowne parking lot. While this limited venue prevented high-speed testing or full dynamic evaluations, it did simulate tight urban maneuvers and parking.
The Aion UT is exceptionally easy to drive. For shorter drivers (my girlfriend Angelica 5'0" stature), the combination of the height-adjustable seat, low dashboard cowl, and standard 360-degree parking cameras significantly lowers the stress of tight parking maneuvers. Which honestly we all know parking is one of the most intimidating tasks for new drivers. Taller drivers (I am 5'9.5" / 177cm) retain plenty of headroom and legroom both in the front and the rear.
The steering is light, throttle tip-in is predictable, and visibility is excellent. However, a definitive assessment on highway and traffic, handling, practicality, comfort and real-world range requires a comprehensive, multi-day road test.

Corporate Outlook and Strategy
The launch was led by high-ranking executives from both regional and global headquarters, underscoring the strategic weight of the Philippine market.
Calvin Cheng (General Manager, GAC International Philippines):
Said that GAC has consolidated its various independent sub-brands (including Aion) into a single unified corporate ecosystem to streamline global distribution. He noted that GAC's current engineering team includes veteran talent recruited from legacy manufacturers like Toyota, alongside deep joint-venture manufacturing partnerships within mainland China.
Masato Katsumata (Chief Technology Officer, GAC International): Detailed the development of the GAC's proprietary Magazine Battery, highlighting GAC’s heavy R&D investments and collaborative projects alongside CATL to ensure the platform did not compromise on thermal safety.
Paulo Del Rosario (Senior Sales Manager, GAC International Philippines): Formally introduced the market pricing structure.

Philippine Pricing & Global Availability
The Aion UT Elite has an official Suggested Retail Price (SRP) of PHP 1,068,000. However, GAC is offering a special introductory price of PHP 998,000 for the first 400 buyers.
The model is currently available for reservation at dealerships across the Philippines. Following its rollout across Southeast Asian markets and its entry into Australia, GAC plans to introduce the hatchback to the European market next.
