The Schiranna-based factory is quietly engineering what could become one of the most powerful and compact motorcycle engines ever built.

Led by MV Agusta’s development engineer Andrea Goggi, the new F5 powerplant, aptly named “Cinque Cilindri” (Italian for “Five Cylinder”), is shrouded in intrigue.

Early insights suggest a square-layout engine featuring a contra-rotating crankshaft, with a transverse parallel-triple forming the front bank and a parallel-twin at the rear: a configuration reminiscent of Suzuki’s legendary RG500 two-stroke, which famously used two parallel-twin engines geared together.

Another possible inspiration could be Volkswagen’s ingenious VR5 engine: a compact five-cylinder design with a narrow 15° angle between cylinder banks. However, judging by the cylinder block architecture, MV’s new F5 appears to take a more unconventional approach than a traditional V5 layout.

From the early images, the F5 engine appears exceptionally compact and technically ambitious. It reportedly employs three camshafts, with one shared between the cylinder banks which is a clever engineering solution that optimizes space and mechanical efficiency.

Displacement is expected to fall between 850cc and 1,150cc, with power output estimated at around 240 CV (237 hp) and 140 Nm of torque. Rumors also suggest that the engine may incorporate an electronically assisted cooling system or even a mild hybrid component to enhance thermal management and power efficiency.

Originally slated for unveiling at EICMA 2025, the launch of the new MV Agusta F5 superbike was delayed following KTM’s withdrawal from its ownership structure.

Nevertheless, the long-awaited reveal of this groundbreaking engine has reignited excitement among enthusiasts. The Cinque Cilindri stands poised to become the most powerful naturally aspirated production motorcycle engine ever produced. A fitting final tribute before future EU emissions regulations bring an end to such feats of mechanical artistry.
