Quezon City, November 18, 2025 – The BMW Owners Society of Saferiders (BOSS) hosted a press briefing at RSA Motors BMW Motorrad in Libis, Quezon City, today to announce the BOSS Ironman Mindanao Cup, a rebranded endurance motorcycle challenge that will run for two full days scheduled for January 30 to February 1, 2026, in General Santos City in Mindanao.

The event, formerly known as the BOSS Ironman Motorcycle Challenge, originated in 2005 as a 1,200-kilometer endurance ride completed within 24 hours, uniting motorcycle and car groups to promote safe riding, camaraderie, and tourism across the Philippines. It evolved into a legendary annual fixture with legs in Luzon, and Mindanao, drawing participants for its grueling test of rider skill and vehicle reliability. However, the 2024 edition (Luzon and Mindanao legs) faced minor setbacks, including 25 reported road accidents per Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group data, injuries, and fatalities, prompting lawmakers to call for its suspension. Congressional hearings in June and July 2024, led by figures like Rep. Richard Gomez and Rep. Bonifacio Bosita, scrutinized organizers over safety lapses and conflicts with moto vloggers, resulting in a one-year hiatus and reorganisation.

To address these concerns, BOSS has restructured the event as the BOSS Ironman Mindanao Cup, shifting from a single-day push to a multi-day format with mandatory 8-12 hour overnight rest stops at designated checkpoints. Organizers emphasized it is no longer an “infamous street race,” as critics once labeled it, but a tourism-driven ride showcasing Mindanao’s landscapes and culture.

Key safety protocols briefed include:

  • Minimum 400cc motorcycles that are roadworthy and legally registered.
  • Mandatory installation of WRU GPS trackers for real-time monitoring; disabling or removal leads to disqualification.
  • Strict adherence to Local Government Unit (LGU) speed limits and traffic laws, with auxiliary lights off during daylight.
  • Full safety gear required within 36 hours of the start.
  • BMW Motorcycles doing their PMS in official Motorrad service centres will have automatic approval in scrutineering.
  • No swapping of riders or teams; all must complete the route together.
  • Priority bike scrutiny at take-off, unruliness or violations will result in disqualification.
  • Coordination with Philippine National Police (PNP), tourism board and LGUs for route support.

The route, mapped via a WRU GPS dashboard displayed at the briefing, starts in Gensan City, then Surrallah, and covers checkpoints in Cotabato City, Pagadian City, Dipolog City (highlight destination with mandatory overnight stop), Dapitan City, Iligan City, Maramag, Digos City, (some locations TBA), with end points in General Santos City. The event precedes the LMFI-NFMCP National Motorcycle Convention in Cagayan de Oro by one week.

Participants will have to register individually and then are required to ride in groups. There can be at least 5 riders per group. Up to 10 is allowed.

Online chatter around the announcement shows enthusiasm for the changes. Facebook posts from the official BOSS Ironman page, including a live briefing stream at 4:00 PM on the November 18 event, garnered views and shares hyping the “2026 BIMC XIX Mindanao Leg” with teaser videos of routes and rider prep. Participants expressed relief over the rest mandates and GPS enforcement, with comments noting improved family-friendly appeal.

NewsMoto will provide on-site coverage of the main BIMC event in January to February, tracking event progress and safety implementations. For registration details, visit the official BOSS Ironman Facebook page.
